Name Tracing Printable: Make a Free PDF for Any Name

A name tracing printable is only useful if it is the right name, in the right letters, on the right paper. This page makes one for you in a few seconds: type the name, choose the handwriting style and the guide lines, and download a PDF sized for US Letter or A4, or print it directly. It is free, and nothing you type leaves your browser.

Each page of the printable is a full sheet of handwriting paper with the name repeated on every row. The default sheet has six rows: a solid black model row at the top and five rows of dashed letters below it. Above the rows there is a short Name and Date line, which teachers use to tell sheets apart and which you can switch off. At the bottom there is one small line of text with the site address, also optional.

The name is drawn as large as the row allows. Short names such as Ava fill the row; long names such as Maximilian are scaled down so they stay on one line. If you want bigger letters for any name, reduce the number of rows per page.

Choosing the right version to print

A name tracing printable is not one worksheet but a family of them, and the settings on this page let you pick the member you need.

  • First tracing sheet: print letters, hollow outlines, four rows, name and date line on. The child colours the letters before tracing them.
  • Everyday practice: print letters, dashed outlines, six rows, model row on. This is the default.
  • Almost independent: dotted outlines or light gray fill, eight rows, last row empty. The child traces most rows and writes the last one alone.
  • Cursive introduction: cursive, dashed outlines, five rows, model row on, so the joined version of the name sits above the tracing rows.
  • Whole class: one name per line in the box, one page per name, one PDF download.

Every combination is drawn on the same three-line paper, so sheets printed weeks apart still look like a set. Learn more about the three handwriting styles on the name tracing worksheets generator page.

Print now or download the PDF

Print opens your browser's print dialog with every page already at the right size. Check three things there: the paper size matches the one you chose (Letter or A4), the scale is 100 percent, and margins are set to none or minimum, because the worksheet carries its own margins. Then print one copy, look at it, and print the rest.

Download PDF is better when you want to print later, print from another device, or share the sheet. The file contains one page per name at 300 dots per inch and opens in any PDF viewer. A single-name sheet is typically under half a megabyte, so it emails easily. PDF readers also let you print several copies per sheet or two pages per side, which is handy for small practice strips.

Both buttons use the same drawing, so what you see in the preview is exactly what comes out of the printer. The PDF is assembled on your device; no file is uploaded anywhere.

Paper, pencils and other practical details

Standard copier paper works for pencil tracing. If the child uses crayons or markers, or if the sheet will be reused, print on heavier card stock, or laminate one copy and trace it with a dry-erase marker. Thick triangular pencils or short crayons are easier for small hands than a long thin pencil.

The guide lines print in a pale blue that comes out light gray on a black-and-white printer. The tracing letters are drawn in a mid gray so that the child's own pencil line stands out clearly on top of them. If you want darker tracing letters for a child with low vision, choose the hollow outline style, which uses a heavier continuous line.

You can also print a sheet with no name at all. Leave the name box empty and the generator uses a sample name; type a single space instead of a name to get blank three-line paper with the same spacing, useful for free writing after the tracing rows are done.

Other name tracing printables on this site

The preschool page starts with bigger letters and fewer rows, which suits children of three to five. The home page explains the print, D'Nealian-style and cursive styles and has tips for teaching a child to write their name. All three pages use the same generator, so a setting you like on one page can be used on any of them.

Questions parents and teachers ask

What size is the name tracing printable?

You choose: US Letter (8.5 by 11 inches) or A4 (210 by 297 millimetres). The PDF page is set to that exact size and each page is drawn at 300 dots per inch, so it prints sharp on a home inkjet or a school laser printer.

Can I save the worksheet as a PDF instead of printing it now?

Yes. Download PDF saves a file named after the name on the sheet, for example name-tracing-worksheet-olivia.pdf. It opens in any PDF reader and you can print it later, send it to a parent or keep it in a lesson folder.

Why should I print at 100 percent?

The worksheet is already laid out for the paper size you picked, with margins that most printers can handle. If the print dialog shrinks it to fit, the rows get slightly smaller than designed. Choose 100 percent or “actual size” and turn off any fit-to-page option.

Does the printable work on a phone?

Yes. The preview, the print button and the PDF download all work on iPhone and Android browsers. On a phone the PDF may open in a new tab first; use the share or save button there to keep it.

Can I print the name tracing worksheet without lines?

Yes. Set Guide lines to “No lines” for letters on plain paper, or “Baseline only” for a single line under each row. The three-line option is the default because it is what most handwriting programmes use.

Is the printable free for classroom use?

Yes. Print as many copies as you like for your own children, your class or a tutoring group. The only thing not allowed is selling the sheets or passing them off as your own product.
